Rhythmic Movement Training (RMT), is a therapeutic method of using gentle rhythmic movements to help develop coordination, emotional stability, mental wellbeing, muscle tone and primitive reflexes. RMT is based on natural movements, similar to infant reflexes, to stimulate the brain and the body’s crucial senses.
A Swedish doctor and psychiatrist by the name of Dr Harald Blomberg worked with Kerstin Linde, a Swedish movement training specialist in the 1980s. They found that there was a special movement sequence many infants followed and by applying those movements to their patients, their patients experienced very noticeable changes in their coordination, behavior, learning challenges, anxiety or emotional levels. After much research and collaboration with others in similar fields such as with Moira Dempsey, they have developed a programme that helps to integrate retained or under developed infant reflexes.
The human brain needs sense stimulation in order to promote the growth of new nerves and to branch the growth of existing nerves. In a baby’s first year of life, their rhythmic movements stimulate the brain and allow for many new neural pathways to form. These movements help connect parts of the brain and link sections together, promoting growth and development.
When there is a lack of brain stimulation during the first year of life, it can lead to problems with processing sensory information and can make it more difficult to access or connect to that specific area of cortex. The ability to easily access the brain’s cortex is the foundation for many skills needed in day-to-day life, such as controlling impulses, learning, managing emotional activity, critical thinking, and decision making.
The beauty of RMT is that anyone can benefit from the natural exercises, from babies all the way through to adults. People who suffer from developmental delays, learning difficulties, physical injuries or trauma, should consider this natural treatment to help improve their quality of life.
